YORK boxing legend Henry Wharton is to make a rare reappearance in the ring this month - to take on Leeds Rhinos boss Brian McDermott in a showcase fundraising fight.

McDermott, 45, a former Marine and professional boxer himself, has trained for previous charity bouts in recent years under Wharton's watchful eye at Henry's Gym in Acomb.

This time, however, the esteemed rugby league boss - whose side won the treble last year - will be taking on Wharton himself, as the former light heavyweight world championship contender goes between the ropes again, bringing back memories of his epic televised battles with Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank two decades ago.
The fight will be top of the bill in a show at Henry's Gym on Friday, February 12, which has been organised to raise funds for the club and, in particular, for its young boxers who are to compete at an international show in Denmark next month.
There will be ten bouts in total, starting at 7pm, with Yorkshire's former light middleweight world champion, Paul 'Silky' Jones, also involved, fighting a Henry's Gym coach, Dave Morrell.
Could get interesting if one of them has a dig.

World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury says fight fans can expect some 'massive news' about his next bout soon.

And the 27-year-old has hinted that he will be squaring off against a surprise opponent.

Anthony Joshua’s next opponent will be announced at 6pm on Sunday, promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed.

The rising heavyweight contender will box at The O2 Arena in London on April 9 and the wait to find out his next foe will soon be over.

"At 6pm this evening, across our social media, we will be announcing @anthonyfjoshua next fight at @TheO2 on April 9," Matchroom promoter Hearn said on Twitter on Sunday morning.

Anthony Joshua will challenge Charles Martin for the IBF world heavyweight title at The O2 on April 9, it has been confirmed.

Martin travels to England to make the first defence of the title that he won in Brooklyn in January against Vyacheslav Glazkov. It will be the unbeaten American's first fight outside the United States.

Joshua has quickly turned The O2 into his boxing fortress, with five of his 15 victories coming at the London venue, including his last outing where he added the British title to his Commonwealth strap with a seventh round stoppage of bitter rival Dillian Whyte.

Saw summer dodgy about fury fighting his cousin, reeeeaaally hope it isn't that!

That said, the 'shock' aspect to me indicates Haye after fury said he'd not fight him.

Hayes next fight is in May no named opponent yet.
