We've been saying this for years...

RE: We've been saying this for years...
On this 'Eddie and Stevo have served the game well' argument...whilst I do not whatsoever deny how much and how well the two have served Sky and by extension served the interests of distributing and popularising the sport as best they can, the line people take up on the theme of 'without them, where would we be?'...I don't buy into that at all. As I say, while I can't knock them for their media efforts, is someone going to tell me there's not someone out there back when it began or, more pertinently, now, who could/can do an equally as good if not better 'job', in the areas of both the presentation itself and of the commercialisation the game?

"'SUID'? Yes... That's what they used to call me. 'Saint Until I Die'. That was my name. I am The Swede. And I come back to you now at the turn of the tide."

Aye, too right it's their business, but that's not for here. All I'm saying is, I think too much is put on their proverbial CV, although, as I say, I don't discredit what they've done, I'm only putting into perspective.

its the most significant and pertinent point. sky are not in the nostalgia business, nor are they in the just filling slots business. its about money, selling advertising etc , and they wouldnt put the numbers in jeopardy by persevering with stevo and eddie if they didnt truly believe they were the best available.

im inclined to trust skys judgement on this over most fans.

Maybe that's because they're the recognisable, perhaps even, 'trusted' partnership, and they don't want to disturb that. Maybe you're right, there may be different ins and outs in business terms that we can't notice. But in terms of my opinion on commentary, I stand by the view that they are out of touch.

I think it's a case of rugby league fans being willing to tune in to Sky regardless. The number of people I know personally who watch rugby league on Sky all complain about Eddie and Stevo, but they wouldn't stop watching because of them, they continue watching despite them.

Sky will stick with Eddie and Stevo because they are part of the furniture. They've been there so long, they will know many people within the company and no doubt be on very good terms with them. Sky will keep them simply because it's easier to do so and because unfortunately for those rugby league fans who dislike Eddie and Stevo, the only way they would ever be replaced is if fans stopped watching, which few if any would ever do.

Speaking of John Kear, I watched Super League Full Time this evening and he was really terrible on that. He barely said anything of interest and just seemed to be attempting to commentate on the pictures that were being shown (badly), but it was like he hadn't even seen the clips before and just ended up rambling. That show is very bad.

The point is here, that since the inception of SL, SKY and it's commentary team have done more for the sport than any other TV channel or national newspaper has ever done. So I think it's a bit rich for a journo from a newspaper with no obvious interest in RL in normal circumstances, to write an article that smacks of poking fun at our game and it's commentators. You may like or dislike the SKY guys, but for all their supposed faults, the one thing they are is enthusiastic and passionate about the game, and that should be all that matters. And at the end of the day, if you really really can't stand the commentators, then just turn the bloody volume down!
Spot on
