Programmes
When I was little, I used to watch loads of videos from games before I was born and one of the main things that I liked was the amount of competitions teams entered into and the amount of games they played over the course of a season.

There didn't seemed to be any politics involved on the face of it. No squad numbers of names of the backs of shirts, no complaining about kit clashes, and there were even games on Christmas Day!

I still have a video of the 1985/86 season (I think) where Rovers' Gary Prohm scored 4 tries away at Odsal against Bradford Northern and I think they won one cup and lost out to Wigan with a dubious try the semi final of another. Or playing on a pitch covered in thick snow against Hull where both clubs donned their home colours.

I've moved onto authobiographies, like Roger Millward's and John Dorahy's, which are excellent, and I got an insight into what League was like back then.

I recently viewed a few Youtube videos from the Grandstand era and was surprised to see people like Richard Madeley on the front desk. I watched Alex Murphy's dressing room rant as Wigan lost a game in the lead up to the Championship season end. It looks so old school and traditional.

Programmes are something else that I also liked and I've got a stack of them knocking about in a big bag somewhere. The main thing for me was that they look so simply and cheap, like the ones below for six pence:

Thankfully us younger sorts have the benefit of records and videos, pictures and programmes to depict what we missed out on but I don't think you can beat the real thing.

RE: Programmes
When I was a kid I remember my dad or his work mates getting me programmes from games they had been to. I always loved flicking through them. I have somewhere I think a Cup Final programme from the Silver Jubilee Cup Final of 1978 between Leeds and St Helens. Good memories from a great era for the game.

RE: Programmes
Old programs are best. The modern ones are just way too expensive for what they are.

RE: Programmes
Back in 1966 an uncle gave me his scrap books from 1950+ plus programmes he had collected going back as far as the 1930's when they were 1 sheet folded in half.
I continued to collect programmes, benefit brochures and such until the 80's when it was all passed to his son, the collection included every wembley final prog, internationals back to the 1920's, yorks cup, lancs cup, and a full set of world cup programmes from Australia 1968.
Spent many hours reading through the collection, in the end the programmes numbered more than 1000, and included at least 1 from every club to ever play in the UK.
Must be worth a bob or two now. Memories.

I can stand the despair, It's the hope I can't bear.

RE: Programmes
I've got one from the 2004 Challenge Cup Final and the 2009 Grand Final. One brings back happier memories than the other...

"'SUID'? Yes... That's what they used to call me. 'Saint Until I Die'. That was my name. I am The Swede. And I come back to you now at the turn of the tide."
