RE: Uni of Gloucester All Golds admitted to Championship One
you are missing some important points here...

firstly, lets applaud Hail for her recollection of the desert rail outpost that is El Alameiningly....

secondly Jools - please list the last brilliant rugby player to emerge from Gloucestershire...one will do...I expect you to go straight on Wikipedia...any decent players will be Union players...he might be able to farm a few a few of his academy players there but, having played student rugby league, the team will be predominantly northeners studying at Gloucester, like any other Uni league team, in fact it says they are in the top 8 Uni teams - in other words they are eighth...so what...

In summary they will be a decent uni team full of northeners...OK some local gloucestershire bods might be interested, as in London, but how will Hetherington reap massive rewards...?? its just another jolly day out for him...you guys are easily taken in by this fruitless waste of effort..

it's not smart...it's a dumb waste of Rhino breath and energy...

and thirdly, Chester, the fact that you are slagging me off tells me that some of my recent jibes have just nibbled under your skin...and that's great news...

There probably haven't been any wibbler-not because nobody in that area can become a good player but because they have never been discovered- and that's exactly my point,

the future's bright - the future is claret and gold.

Interesting arguments posted above (as usual), and for what it's worth I think it's great! There's nothing wrong with expansion if it's carried out correctly, and this is being done that way....new Co-Op championship 1 teams, in new areas, but importantly starting at the bottom and being given time to grow and develop at their own pace. And if SL sides can help out along the way with that process then so what! It's good to see the games super powers taking an interest in the game at grass roots level, and for me long may that continue!

I went to UoG the league team isn't made up with displaced northeners. for a start there's probably not enough northens there to fill a sevens team. The team used to always be top of south divsion with Leeds uni top of north.

The union bods 'round Glos are pretty open to league they respect it for it physical and fitness levels. They were even over joyed when you sold them a washed up Vinikolo.

Glos/worcs/hereford are all ripe for growing the game as they are already used to rugby and they're very few girlyball teams of any quality.

Correct. Don't know why but they've bailed.

RE: Uni of Gloucester All Golds admitted to Championship One
Cardoza the Chairman of the football club only ever wanted the league side to subsidise the off season costs of the stadium and when he realised that he had to pay more than peanuts for players he bailed out. The RFL should have backed the Northampton Demons who have a strong presence in the area.

This is from the Northampton website

The RFL and Northampton Rebels have mutually agreed to the withdrawal of the club from their planned entry into Championship One as one of the four new semi-professional clubs in 2013.

RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer expressed his disappointment but said the decision testified to the effectiveness of the assessment and vetting procedures all new clubs are undergoing.

“It had become increasingly clear in recent weeks that Northampton were not where they needed or wanted to be” said Rimmer.

“We have been working closely with Northampton Rebels over the last few months but the club expressed concerns about their ability to prepare for their entry into Championship One.

“Whilst it is clearly a very disappointing development, our decision provides verification that the rigorous checks we have in place are working and that there is a quality threshold being applied.

“It was never going to be an easy process for a new club to gear up to meet the challenges of a semi-professional competition and we have always had contingencies in place for an eventuality such as this.

“Although the journey proved to be too difficult for Northampton Rebels, we always had highly credible alternatives in reserve: we will make the right decisions for the competition and exciting announcements lie ahead in the near future.”

Northampton Chairman David Cardoza said he was sorry that his ambitions for the Rebels could not be realised.

“We didn't want to launch something that had no chance of success and was not going to be competitive,” he said. “It was always of paramount importance to us that the Rugby League side didn't impact on the football club, and we were concerned there was an increasing risk of that happening.

“We spoke to the RFL who have been a big help to us, and so with regret we have agreed to withdraw. I want to personally thank Ralph Rimmer and Steve Ferres for their fantastic assistance and support during this project: this decision is no reflection on them whatsoever.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far, and particularly those supporters who have put their views forward.

“I am proud of the work we did to get the Rebels this far, and am truly sorry that we have had to end the adventure here.”

The RFL has already confirmed that Hemel Stags and University of Gloucestershire All Golds as two of the four new clubs who will participate in a 10-team Championship One competition in 2013.

The identity of the other two successful applicants will be announced in due course.
