Widnes 'worked hard' for licence

I quite like Dennis Betts. He's an honest bloke who works his arse off for his club.

He makes some good points. Acceptance into Super League is basically a 3-year promotion and relegation cycle on the basis that minimum standards are met by the prospective team from the Championship.

Widnes will hopefully prove that the 3-year 'cycle' is justified and in our attempts to increase standards across the board that they do improve after this season's baptism of fire.

This Andy Burnham fella is talking shit. He said that promotion and relegation in it's usual form should return because it is 'the British way' of doing things. What kind of argument is that? More like, 'Leigh Centurions are in my constituency and If I say this the fans may vote for me!'.

We should have what has been suggested before in the RL press a two teir SL with ten teams in each 'league' sky money still evenly disributed between the clubs. plus franchising for teams to move up and back down to the championship if they don't meet the grade.

That is the basis for what I've pretty much wanted to see for a while. Unfortunately, there is just not enough cash coming in to do this. We struggle on 14 teams as it is even though the RFL's turn over is like £31m-a-year.

I like the franchising system as it encourages long term development not just one good season.

However, something does need to be done to keep standards improving in the championship. Whether the work needed to apply for a franchise helps with that long term is yet to be seen though.

I don't licensing. Let's face it. 10/14 teams are "safe". Makes you wonder why chanpionship teams bother trying to comply with the rfl. We had 1 team change over the last 3 years. What has that done for SL? Are cas improving? Are wakey? Only real improvers are the 2 hull teams.

RE: Widnes 'worked hard' for licence
There are only 6 founding Super League members in the division now.

It is a case of having to be up to the standard to play in the league. If you're not then you don't deserve to be there. SL can't just allow anyone in because it devalues the whole concept.

There has always been licensing...........remember when Dewsbury won NL1..............not good enough to come up..................and what about the 20 times Hudds finished bottom................but were exempt from relegation................

You can't expect changes overnight though. Realistically it needs until the end of the next round of franchises before you can start to judge the level of improvement across the board.

RE: Widnes 'worked hard' for licence
The system has steadied us as a club, we are much more stable than we were a few years ago. Several bigger clubs could do worse than look at the model we've got in place at Wids now.

Andy Burnham is a tosspot. He used to be sports secretary and changed his stance depending on where he was. Complete knoblet.

MOOOOOOOOVVVEEE....
