Wigan coach Shaun Wane believes Sam Tomkins is being targeted by opposition players and has asked officials to protect the England full-back.

Setaimata Sa was put on report for a strong tackle on Tomkins during Wigan's win over Catalan Dragons on 9 June.

Wane told BBC Radio Manchester: "I feel Sam is getting some unfair treatment and I don't just mean the Sa incident.

"I just feel like he's not getting the protection from the RFL (Rugby Football League) that he deserves."

Tomkins, who has scored 14 tries in Super League this season, continues to enhance his reputation as one of the stars of the world game and Wane is determined to make sure he is looked after.

"If he's not [protected], it's my job as head coach to look after him and we'll protect him from within," added the Warriors coach.

"If those at the RFL don't see a problem with it, we'll just carry on and deal with it how we need to within the rules of the game.

"Whatever happens to Sam, I'll make sure that our defenders do the same. I'm not having Sam put under the pressure that he's being put under."

Leaders Wigan face Denis Betts' Widnes at the DW Stadium on Monday.
And the Warriors are looking for revenge following their shock 37-36 defeat to Super League's bottom club at the Stobart Stadium in March.

Well not many are going to agree because well... it's Sam.

I actually don't even agree with him, he's the best player in our team, perhaps the league (My opinion) so of course he's going to get targeted. That's just something that has to be accepted. If anyone goes to far then they get disciplined... simple as that.

I'd agree with you that he's the best player in SL but the problem for opposition coaches is how to deal with him?? And how do you do that? Well one way is to hit him hard when you actually manage to get hold him n hope that the pain will put him off his game. Lots of clubs have always given physical treatment to the smaller skillful players like Burrow and Robinson

To be honest I think it's more a reaction to the Leeds game rather than the Sa tackle. It was obvious in that game that the Leeds players were looking for every opportunity to all jump in at Tomkins. It's like they hadn't a clue what else to do to stop him.

Wigan fans already know that teams go all out to knock Tomkins off the park. It's nothing new and it's been happening for years now.

It's not exactly a thrilling article though. Basically, 'we think players are targeting Tomkins so we'll do what we're already doing if the refs keep doing what they are already doing'
