Mcdonnell rejects new contract offer

Mcdonnell rejects new contract offer

Hull Kingston Rovers Friday 11 May 2012 2:31pm

The club can confirm that Shannon McDonnell will be leaving MS3 Craven Park at the end of the current campaign having turned down the offer of a new two-year contract.

The fullback joined the Robins from the Newcastle Knights last November on a one-year deal and has been an ever present in the side this season. The 24-year-old has also been one of the most consistent performers during the first half of 2012 and that being the case the club had hoped to retain his services for 2013 and beyond.

A new and improved two-year deal was offered to McDonnell but he has rejected it, meaning that he will move on when his current contract expires at the end of this season.

Rovers' CEO, Mike Smith, admits that the club are disappointed to be losing the 24-year-old and said:

"Shannon only signed for one year when he came across as he wanted to prove himself in the Super League so full credit to him for that. Everyone at Hull KR has been impressed with him, both on and off the pitch, and we really wanted to keep him at the club which is why we made him a new and improved two-year offer.

"Obviously we're disappointed that Shannon has chosen not to take us up on that offer but have agreed, at the request of his agent, to allow him to speak to other clubs. In the meantime I have no doubt that Shannon will continue to give his all for Hull Kingston Rovers during the rest of this season."
