Millar commits to Sheffield Eagles for 2017 season

Sheffield Eagles youngster Ryan Millar is the latest name to commit himself to the club after agreeing a one-year deal.

The speedy winger has been knocking on the door of regular first-team involvement over the past 18 months, and his progress has been rewarded with an extended deal with the club.

Another product of the Eagles’ youth system, the Birmingham-born talent faces a big year in his development as he looks to break into Mark Aston’s plans on a regular basis.

“We have seen the potential that Ryan has over the last season and a quarter,” said Aston.

“He has so much speed and he has the ability to score tries. Just look at his record in the games that he has been involved in at first-team level, it is excellent.

“This could be a real breakthrough year for Ryan. If he continues to work hard, and listens what we are saying to him, then he can have himself a very good career in this game.

“He needs to find a way to start cementing his place in my team. He now needs to be looking to make dozens of appearances if he is going to continue his impressive progression. He has all the ability, that is not in question. Now it is about expanding his knowledge, and there is no better way of doing that by playing games."

Millar made his breakthrough by scoring a brace of tries on his debut against London Broncos in 2015, before making a name for himself in the Super 8 qualifiers by bagging a hat-trick in a spirited defeat to Hull KR.

Last season Millar again showed signs of his growing potential, scoring five tries in his eight appearances in all competitions.

Millar is the second youth team product to commit himself to the club following last week’s confirmation that hooker Greg Burns had also agreed a new deal.

Matt James has also officially signed up for next year, whilst Aston has added newcomers Jordan Cox, Will Hope and Perry Whiteley to his growing numbers.
