Friday 17 Jul 2015 5:33pm

One of Rugby League’s leading community clubs, Thatto Heath Crusaders is on track to raise hundreds of pounds for club funds by taking part in the Founders Walk next Friday (July 24).

The walk is a six-day trek from Hull to St Helens that celebrates the sport’s 120th anniversary and clubs, groups and individuals are all encouraged to join in to fundraise for Rugby League good causes.

Thatto Heath will hit the road on the final leg of the walk when the club’s juniors will be out in force with parents and family members providing sponsorship for what will be a day of celebration for everyone.

The St Helens-based team will feature members from their under-7s, under-9s, under-12s and under-14s teams, who will walk from Sherdley Park, St Helens, to Langtree Park.

Each age group has set £100 as the target to reach before they take to streets of St Helens next Friday.

Thatto Heath, who have produced some notable players over the years including Alex Murphy OBE and current St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham, will be joined by plenty of other community clubs who will be raising money for their clubs and charities over the course of the six days.

Kevin Thompson, a committee member at Thatto Heath, said: “We’re representing the community clubs who will also be taking part like ourselves.

“We’ve got four age groups doing the walk and they’ve all made the donation to Rugby League Cares, but they will be hoping to raise some money for their teams.

“We’re very supportive of the RFL, and we have a strong working relationship with them, so taking part in the Founders Walk is a continuation of the support for the RFL and fingers crossed some good funds can be raised.”

The 120-mile trek will visit the original sites of all 22 clubs who founded the Northern Union on August 29, 1985, at the George Hotel in Huddersfield.
