Charnley determined to end season with silverware

Thursday 23 Jun 2016 6:21pm

As well as reaching the Super League Grand Final, Wigan Warriors winger Josh Charnley is also looking to add Ladbrokes Challenge Cup success this year and hopes the team can claim a quarter-final win against Castleford Tigers this Saturday at the DW Stadium (5.30pm).

After making his professional debut in 2010, the 25-year-old announced he’ll be leaving the Warriors earlier this season. He has made over 130 appearances for Wigan including two Challenge Cup victories and would add a third Wembley appearance to his impressive Rugby League career if they were to reach the final again this year.

Charnley admits the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup is a special occasion and would relish the opportunity to go all the way: “I try and take each game as it comes - I’m just thinking about winning. I want some silverware at the end of the year. I’ve been here eight years and Wigan is a special place to be at. I just want to leave on a good note for the club and for our fans.

The Wigan winger knows how good it is to walk out at Wembley after beating Hull FC in 2013 and Leeds in 2011, a game in which Charnley scored the first try of the game after 10 minutes.

“The Challenge Cup final is an amazing day, the week building up to it is something that you’ll never forget,” said Charnley.

“It’s an honour to play at such an iconic stadium, it’s one of those where you want to make memories with your mates and in 10 or 15 years’ time when you’re in the pub together those are the things you look back at.”

The schedule for the four Ladbrokes Challenge Cup quarter-finals is as follows:

Thursday June 23 – Huddersfield Giants v Wakefield Trinity Wildcats (Sky Sports, 8.00pm kick-off)

Friday June 24 – Warrington Wolves v Widnes Vikings (BBC Two, 8.00pm kick-off)

Saturday June 25 – Hull FC v Catalans Dragons (Sky Sports, 1.30pm kick-off)

Saturday June 25 – Wigan Warriors v Castleford Tigers (BBC Two, 5.30pm kick-off).

The semi-final draw will also be broadcast on BBC Two on Saturday following the completion of Wigan Warriors v Castleford Tigers.

Tickets for the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 27 costs from just £20 and can be purchased by visiting www.rugby-league.com/tickets or calling the Rugby League Ticket Hotline on 0844 856 1113.
